I was hiking with my mom (and dog) today and I heard a stomping noise and sticks breaking above us. I looked up and there was a deer about 100 feet away on a small hill! It would leap two or three times, stop to look around, and then it would leap again. It was out of sight 30 seconds later. I joked to my mom that there is probably a bear chasing it.

We passed some people a few minutes before, so we waited a minute for them to catch up to see if they saw the deer too. Before they caught up, I looked up at where the deer came from and there was a brown bear, again about 100 feet away. I crouched down and didn't move because I remembered that bears follow movement/panic (hopefully that's correct). It started coming slightly towards us and turned its head our way.

My mom freaked out because she thought it would eat our dog, so she picked it up (it weighs 20 lbs) and started running. There was no point in standing next to a bear when it's agitated, so I followed. It didn't follow us, so I'd call that a good day!

SR20? Of course not! When a bear is 100 ft from you, would your first reaction (or any reaction) be to take your phone out and take a picture?

I crossed paths with a moose on a mountain bike trip. Also skid mark inducing. Those things are huge

Pretty sure my first reaction would necessitate new shorts.

Worst I've seen is a moose. Horrifying, I know.

I kinda wish I could see one but then again I really don't. Glad you live to oppo again.

I have seen many a bear, getting about as close as 30 ft once (whoops). When I was about 11 I encountered a mountain lion. However my brother has the best bear story. He was walking through my parents neighbours yard and at one point walked under a tree. He heard a rustling in the tree and looked up only to see a bear in the tree looking down at him.

My brother was so startled that he fell right down onto the ground. My dad witnessed this, I did not. I would have laughed my ass off had I seen this.

I crossed paths with a mountain lion on a mountain bike trip when I was about 11. I almost died I was so damn scared. My dad said when I got home, I was as white as a sheet. I also saw a mountain lion in my neighbours yard once.

Luckily I had just biked up a HUGE hill....it didn't come for me, but if it did, I actually would have had a decent chance of outrunning it on my bike down the hill. That is about the ONLY scenario where you would have a decent chance of simply outrunning it.

They can run up to 35 mph for short distances, but this hill is steep, and 5-6 kms long so if you got up to speed quick enough it wouldn't be able to maintain it's speed to close in on you fast enough. It would probably give up. But yes, totally terrifying.

on a road or dirt trail? I'd say u have a chance on a road but I tried going down a ski slope in the summer around 30 mph. I found a ditch and gravity took over.
